Finally got out on a proper ride on my new to me 2012 V-Strom 650. About 100 miles of twisties and 100 miles of slab.
Let's get this out of the way, it's a very nice bike! The motor is great, pulls very well from off idle and just keeps going. I've seen the power band refered to as "seamless" and that's about what it is. I guess some think that's boring but to me coming off the KLR it's pretty quick. According to the press 0 - 60 is 3.5 seconds and it does the 1/4 mile in 12.43 sec. @ 101.77 mph.
I've also read that the handling is "neutral" is that a good thing? Yep. It turns in without much input and then just stays online. My KLR was a little busy mid corner not nervous really but the Strom feels planted.
Sounds like I'm gushing huh? Well yea a bit new bike and all that. There are some nits:
The stock ergos were cramped for my 6' self. Felt like my knees were up above my hips and long reach for the bars. Weird bend to them also. Fixed all that though. Plates to lower
the pegs and flatter bars with risers. Seems to be plenty of aftermarket stuff available kinda like the KLR.
Brakes, dual disks up front and ABS. It stops better than the KLR for sure but they are kind of mushy at the lever. From what I'm reading stainless lines don't help much. Seems to be the nature of the ABS system on the bike.
OK last comment, the slab. Yea baby 70 mph and there's power to pass quickly! 6 gear (yea it really has 6 gears just like the KLR used to, inside joke!) 70 mph is a bit under 5K rpm, redline is 10K. Twist the throttle and 90 comes up pretty quick and hey if you're really in a hurry, downshift.
Still haven't sold my KLR so the Strom farkeling is on hold. Pretty happy with it so far can you tell?
