stupid question about klr650

first off id like to say this is my first bike. its the red 08 i think i made the right choice for my starter bike. im lovein every miniut of it. it might not be a speed demon but its way faster than my 98 kia. anyway i got 2 questions. thinkin about new windshield a tall one. that will keep the wind off my neck. & make it more comfy for freeway time anybody up grade yet ? and i have been checkin out you guys & gals bike picks lots of nice picks on this forum. my owners manuel says not to strap more than twenty something lbs. on the back of rack it looks you guys load your bikes down preety close to that weight. does it make it handle much worse? thanks for any advice. oh one more ? it is preety cold here right now does anybody else have a hard time getting it started?

Mine starts great, but I did the 22 cent mod to richen it up when I put on my E2 pipe. YOu may try opening up the plug that hides the air mixture screw on your carb and richening it up a hair to help. The klr seems to come pretty lean from the factory in my opinion. Search around on here under carb mods and you will find a ton of views.

regarding the weight in the back.....From what I understand it has contributed to a shimmy (spell check) in the front wheel at high speed. Takes too much weight away from the front. More of an uneven balance thing than just the 20lbs....

Put a travel trunk on mine from JC Whitney, easy to mount, but any significant loads will go in a surplus army duffle bag tied to the bike and travel trunk, in the passengers spot.
