I need to apologize to all of you KLR650 riders

Last week while I was in Hawaii, I rented a KLR650 for a day from the guy who runs hiadv.com. I was hoping for a DR650, but he sold that before I got there. I had to "settle" for a KLR as the next best choice among the garage full of bikes that were available.

Although the KLR still has an unexciting powerband compared to my XR650L and is a bit clumsy off road, I have to admit that it is a much better bike on the street than the XR. I rode the thing 335 miles from South Point to as high as you can legally go on Mauna Loa. I would have had a sore butt on the XR, but the KLR worked great the whole time and was a lot of fun on the twisty sections of road that I was able to find. I felt great after the ride and I can now see that if you only have one bike, the KLR would be a good choice. Looks like it would be an excellent commuter bike too, since I didn't have too much trouble hitting 90 mph a couple of times and it would cruise at 80 no problem.

So I will no longer be making fun of KLR riders and might even recommend that bike to some people. It is a decent bike.

Scott's a good man. The reason I have a KLR is because we used to frequent the same MC safety forum. I got kicked off. When my Honda was proving unreliable for a commute (73 CB450) and I was going over the GG Bridge every day (Kymco 150 no longer an option), I asked Scott what MC one should get if they wanted a bullet proof simple bike. Scott recommended the XR and KLR. I ride on the road a lot so I got the KLR.

Strangely, I was JUST the other day saying to Karen, "Man, I sure am glad I was smart enough to ask Scott about what bike to buy." We're broke, and the KLR is a good broke bike.

So, I would not own a KLR, have met any of y'all, ridden offroad, or known what the hell a doohickey was if it wasn't for Mr. Nelson.

Good to see you around, brother. You rode my KLR, but just for 30 seconds or so. Not many people have ridden my bike except me and family.

That is all. Hope all's well, Scott.

BTW, if y'all are nice maybe Scott will show you pictures of his street bikes...

I wasn't thinking anything else LJ! I remember Scott looking for input about dualsport bikes some time ago and was just surprised that he had never gotten to ride one before. I should have phrased my response to him better. My apologies Scott!!

No! Your response was fine. I was just giving the background because I owe a debt to Scott. I said, "if you're nice to him" just because I have two girls and use that expression 10K times a day.

I wasn't referring to your post.

I had taken two of them for test rides, an old version and Lockjaw's newer model and neither felt right to me for riding in the dirt, which was my main goal. I didn't ride either of them far enough to make a judgement about street capabilities because I had a good street bike (or two) at the time.

But my eyes have been opened about what a good all around bike the KLR is.

This is what I had a year ago, but sold the closest one:

Scott,
We may be hearing/seeing more of your postings in the near future?

Thanks for the referral to Lockjaw. I'm sure he has no regrets, about his choice.

Your next, to take your own advice. Just guessing?

I have a KTM 990 Adv which is a much better street bike than the KLR and better off road too. Plus it doesn't weigh much more than a KLR. The only thing it doesn't do is go as far on a tank of gas.

And I have the XR650L for around town and dirt.

So no, I won't be buying a KLR soon. But it still might be the right bike for other riders and I'll be happy to recommend it.
