Email to Shell........

I recently looked at a bottle of Rotella T5 15/40 synthetic blend. Was thinking that it would be great for my KLR, then I noticed- no jaso ma rating.

Today I emailed Shell, and asked why, and if there would be jaso rating in the future?
Their reply was: while we are sure it would pass jaso standards, we already have two oils(T6 5/40, and T 15/40), that are popular with motorcyclists, and don't think it would be cost effective at this time to undergo testing.

If this is true, would the T5 be safe in a KLR? Thoughts?

I wouldn't have a problem using it. I use plain Rotella in the KLR and T6 in my Goldwing.

I don't see an advantage to the T5 though. The regular stuff is good enough and cheaper. You're oil change intervals won't change so save your money.

I use T6 in my KLR, my Honda Rancher, and my Cub Cadet mower. Figured to save some $. T5 is only $2/ gallon more than T, and $5 less than T6.
I like the extra piece of mind synthetic or blend gives me, as I commute at interstate speeds a couple hundred miles per week on the bike.

Not even Kawasaki says JASO designation is mandatory.

Check your Owner's Manual; T5 meets recommended API Service Code requirements and viscosity recommendations (for most ambient temperatures encountered).

Fear not the T5.

I vowed I would never participate in another oil discussion....

But IIRC, JASO MA only refers to having the right (or no) friction modifiers so that the wet clutch won't stick or slip. I use the cheap Rotella 15-40 in both bikes 'cause the '86 Kawi 454 clutch will stick like crazy with anything else.

My thought is try any oil that has the right viscosity and API specs. If you like the way your clutch works, you've found your new oil. If not, cleanse it with a JASO MA oil for 1000 miles and try something else.
