What to look for/at when buying a used KLR 650?

Hello all.

I am new to the forum and considering buying a used 650.

I am going to look at one tomorrow afternoon and wanted to post a thread asking what I need to be looking for. I am an experience motorcycle rider and know the normal stuff/questions when buying a used bike, but I am curious about KLR 650 specific issues.

The bike is an 06, with less than 6K miles.

Also, how many miles should you get out of the OEM tires if most of your riding is on pavement and the bike is ridden normal (not hard)?

Thanks for your time!

Welcome aboard hawk....
The only real issue with the KLR is making sure the doohickey has been done. If the PO has not replaced it, just put that on the top of the list to do. Not a big issue if you know how to wrench.

Give this link a good look over and should answer any question you might have about the bikes:

As for the OEM tires, I got a little over 6k on the front and the back was toast at 3k. I have run Avon Gripsters, with my back one going to make almost 6k.

Previous ride was a 2007 KLR Black/Silver, I miss it..
Looking to get back into KLR's sometime soon.

I appreciate the info.

I recall reading something about the doohickey in magazines a while back. I can't remember the details, but if I do get the bike I will pour over the forums and upgrade it.

I will check out the link you sent for sure.

Thanks again!
