Just picked up a 2005 KLR650. Red/black. it had 1460 miles on it when i picked up. it has crash cage, highway pegs, after market lights on front fairing beside headlight. skid plate. in great shape. it seems to get around 47 miles to the gallon. i mostly ride on a 2 lane highway back and forth to work with some mild off road'n. Welcome aboard JWP...congrats on the purchase, sounds like it is already farkled out nicely...If you can check with the previous owner and see if they replaced the DOO...if not that would be something to put at the top of your list to do. Until you find out, I suggest not adjusting it, lest it or the spring are broke..

Previous ride was a 2007 KLR Black/Silver, I miss it..
Looking to get back into KLR's sometime soon.

Funny you should mention the DOO... I purchased it from the second owner who got it from a dealer friend of his in IDAHO. someone traded it in. and it was sitting on the show room floor for quite some time. he did not know if the Doo had been changed. and i have no idea how to contact the original owner. I would imagine if he put the time and money in to the other mods that he most likely has done the doohickey mod. but there is no way to be sure other than open the engine up and see i would imagine. I am not to familiar with the internals of the engine yet but my research is ongoing.

JWP, it might be as simple as calling the Idaho dealer. They'll have a file by VIN.

But then you're not looking at a lot of money or time to do it. I'm pretty sure that if you find it's already done, someone on the forum will take the new parts off your hands.
