Need advice on a used KLR

Hi and Thanks for taking the time to look at this.

I have settled on the KLR650 as the bike for me and now I need to sift through all the used ones (not in the budget for new) and try not to get burned with buying a bike with problems...

There are a few available in my area that interest me, but the one that I think I like the most is a 2002 with over 18k miles (and the owner say he doesn't know the real mileage because of the digital speedo upgrade made by the previous owner)... is that a lot of miles for a KLR?

This bike also has a lot of upgrades/accessories (listed below) and seems to be well maintained and apparently has been recently painted and serviced... the guy wants $3200... do any of you think this is a fair asking price for a bike with this many (questionable) miles ???

What are some things to look/listen for that might indicate that the bike has seen significantly more miles and might be near needing major repairs ???

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give, Happy Trails!

Upgrades/Accessories:

K-9 Fork brace..
Doo-hickey...
Aftermarket Exhaust...
NEW IMS Offroad Footpegs....
New Happy Trails Side Luggage Rack....
Mad Dog Tank Panniers....
Wolf Man Pannier Bags....
Renthal Bars...
Maier Aluminium Hand guards with plastic deflectors...
Trail Tech Vapor CPU/Speedometer....
Dunlop 606's front and rear, 75% tread....
UNI Airfilter...
KTM Front Fender....
Aluminum Skid Plate...
Odyssey Sealed Battery....

buying used

Unfortunately the decision ultimately lies with you. Sounds like the bike has alot of extras which is a plus but only if they are things you like. The doohickey being done is a big plus. You might like to know when the valves were last adjusted - or at least checked. Check the sprockets for wear. Check around the front sprocket for leaking - or anywhere else. What does the bike sound like - does the engine make any odd noises? Ride it - that will give you a good indicator. - Personally the ? about actual mileage would put me off but if the bike seems solid and the price came down a bit i might be for it... Good luck

A couple of months ago, I bought an 06 with 880 Miles for $3,200. Tank and rear bag, highway pegs (no doo). That one has more stuff, but sounds to me like the seller is too proud of it. Keep looking.

I have a 2003 with 50 miles short of 30,000. It has gone through 3 sets of brakes, 2 chains and sprockets, and cooling fan assembly. (not to mention tires, grips and replacement of left switch assembly following an off road mishap.) I use the bike everyday winter and summer and still get 50 - 60 mpg commuting.

I just bought a 1996 KLR with over 45,000 miles. It has had a very easy life. Documentation shows that it has been maintained meticulously! With dates of every tire change, brake change, service, valve adj. etc. I am not at all scared of the mileage, just depends on how it has been ridden!
