Break In Guidance Needed

I have put just over 100 miles on my 08. I really like the bike so far. A group of guys that I ride with are going to do the circle tour around Lake Superior this week. Part of me would really like to go with them, while the other part of me is more worried about properly observing the break in period. There is a group of about 15 people, so we are not going to be flying around the lake at high speeds, and the first 600 miles are twisty and through cities so there should be variances in rpm's. The total trip is just over 1200 miles. I need some advice. Do I go and just make sure to treat my bike nice, or do I pass this year and try to go next year? Any advice would be great.

Thanks,
Erik

I would say go and enjoy a great trip. If breaking in a motor per factory recommendations is at the top of your list, 60MPH is about 4200 RPM. 200-300 RPM more over 4000 isn't going to hurt anything. Then there are those of us that believe in breaking in a motor by riding it at the beginning just exactly how your going to ride it as long as you own it. Basically you don't want to just hammer it and run it up to the redline. But running the RPM's up and down thru the range in a mature manner to me makes more sense. The first 100 to 200 miles are pretty much the essential miles for break in. After that it doesn't matter much. If you do go on the trip I suggest draining your oil and replacing the filter with new, and you will be good to go. As soon as you get back, change the oil again and then start doing normal routing mileage oil changes of whatever range of miles you plan on doing. If you do go, keep us posted with some pics of the trip when you get back. It basically boils down to what you are comfortable doing. I personally don't think you have a thing to worry about.

Exactly... Get out this week and slap another few hundred miles on it and change oil right before heading out, and change again when you get back..

I bought a new Goldwing a couple weeks ago, and I broke it in while riding a 13 hour road rally with friends. I took it out the day before to scrub the tires in and slap 70 miles on it (Same day as I bought it), and ended up with 500 miles on it by the end of the weekend. I changed oil at 650 (Suggested at 1000 on the Wing) and will change it again at 1500 or so, and then will go to changing every 3K or so. (recommended is 4K)..

I rode it like I planned on typically riding it, with emphasis on engine braking to flush oil off the cylinders while not under power, and I kept the engine revs less than 2/3rds of redline.

The oil was still spotless when I changed it, and it hadn't used any at all.. I'd think your's will be similar.. Ride it and enjoy it!!

Also, have a great time on the trip. I rode the loop around Superior a couple years ago.. My fondest memory was riding down a vally, where water was on both sides. A small eagle grabbed a fish out of the water and flew right over my head as it positioned the fish forward in it's talons, all the while water dripped from the fish..

Have a great time, and TAKE PICTURES!!!

I put on another 250 miles yesterday. I went to the Dennis Kirk warehouse and stopped by Aerostich headquarters when I got back to town. I changed the oil on the bike. It was ridiculously easy. Took me 9 minutes total. Tomorrow morning we are leaving. the forecast is calling for 43 degrees and rain. It should be interesting. There are ten of us going. People are riding everything from crotch rockets to full dresser Harleys. I think I am going top go to the local bike shop to look for a heated vest. I will keep you posted. wish me luck.

Been away from the board for awhile. I made the trip around Lake Superior without incident. I even had the opportunity to bail out one of our guys on a fully dressed Harley. New cam for Harley reduced gas mileage and we had to take some fuel from my KLR a few times to get him to the next station. Temps were in the 30's when we left and it was raining. It turned out to be one of the best motorcycle trips I have taken. After 4 days and 1300 miles I still love my KLR. I will post pics under a new thread when I get a chance to fight with my camera to give them up.
