Thumbs up KLR Sidecar Project

http://community.webshots.com/album/563862510uvncJG

Just finished right now with the mounting and alignment. Lots of things to finalize, a rack for behind the box for Jeep can, ammo tool box etc.

Next DS ride I'll ride sweep and there will be plenty of room for cold beverages, buckets of chicken and ?

That looks cool. Did you make everything yourself or was it off the shelf somewhere?
How does the side car affect the performance of the KLR?
What about gas mileage?
And one other question, just how do you corner a bike with a side car?

I see a few bikes around here with side cars but maybe only one or two. I have always wanted to try one out but never worked up the nerve to ask someone.

The sidecar is a California Friendship w/o body. The box is a Contico storage box from Lowes. The mounts are from Dauntless Motors up your way. I have built sidecars from the ground up but this one is a hillbilly stepchild.
I just mounted it today so time will tell for mpg. It weighs about 150 lbs so it's like carrying a passenger performance-wise. On the open road there's more wind drag of course.

Driving an outfit is kind of odd. It is asymmetrically powered and braked so those actions affect the handling and are used to make it perform well. Wet weather riding becomes fun and snow, ice for mud are a reason to ride.
I used to race SCs, MX, TT and some desert. Got a #1 AMA plate in '75.
The ideal setup would be to add a leading link front end and that may come later as $ becomes availalbe.
I have an extra one (LL) but it's for a GL1000 and would require a bit of modification to fit the Kaw. It's worth too much to chop it up. It is for sale if someone wants one.

Sidecars are just another ring in the motorcycle circus.

One of the things I thought of is the toe allingment. Is it adjustable or do you just have to be real carefull when installing?
You mentioned the braking issue, would it be feasable to add some sort of linked setup or are things just easier to ride as is?
There is a fellow up near here that uses side cars on KLR's. In fact he and his wife own KLR650.com but I have yet to meet him and check out his ride, only talked to his wife at their store.

All the alignments are adjustable.
I have the toe in set at about 1/2in. With such a short bike I think it should about right. I have neutral lean and will see how that works. I set the sdiecar wheel lead to about 1 foot.

The lack of a brake is no issue with this lightweight. I've had outfits with and without and the heavy rigs benefit from the brake for sure.

I added a Ural hack to my KLR last summer. It has performed well, gets about 42mpg. Rear tire wear was an issue but added Metzeler 880 tires which hopefully will last longer.
Steering is hard and am thinking about the leading link but it is expensive.
Have heard replacing the 21" front wheel with a smaller one like 18" or 19" would reduce effort. Anyone have any info on that aspect?
I went from a Ural so performance is improved. Sidecars aren't about going fast anyway.

I am on my second KLR/Hack, the first got stolen.

On the 1st, I ran a Steerite tripple tree modification, rakes the fork about 5* more reducing trail for EZ steering and quick handling.

This outfit so far has stock geometry but I did raise the rear with raising links and lower the front an inch which reduces the trail some. A Steerite is in my future when money loosens up.

I made my own subframe for this rig and it's held up just fine. $20 worth of steel.

The cops found my '03 KLR, it was pretty beat up and no sidecar so I returned the '88 to solo and spent some time in my shop to create Booger II.

I used the '03 because it has the modified triple trees and sidecar mounts.

She's passenger ready, folding seat over a 15x15x18 steel tool box.
