Selling my KLR

I'm considering selling/trading in my KLR in favor of getting something more highway-friendly, as I'm not riding off-road as much as I had hoped. I have two questions:

1. Would I have better luck selling privately, or trying to sell/trade in at a dealer? I don't really want to finance something new, so I'm trying to get as much as possible, rather than trying to sell quickly.

2. What's a fair price to ask?

It's a 2008, good shape, with about 17,600 miles. Basic mods (luggage, doo, 17 tooth front sprocket, new exhaust).

Usually you'll get the most by doing a private sale. Craigslist can give you an idea of asking prices (search country-wide) and e-Bay can give you an idea of selling prices.

There's no harm in finding what you want at a dealer and asking what you'd get in trade-in, though. There is less hassle in doing a dealer trade-in.

I have to be candid on the '08, though. Those who know KLRs tend to steer clear of '08 and '09 bikes due to the oil burning issue. I had an '08 that burned oil almost faster than I could put it in. I had to do a 685 to fix that. I have an '09 that was fixed by Kawasaki to fix oil burning. It's now burning oil pretty severely and will require a new piston, though I will likely go with a Wossner.

I loved both of them, but if I get another it will not be an '08 or an '09.

You should be able to get around $3500 for it.
I know I've read how horrible the 08's are for burning oil but mine doesn't and my friends doesn't. I recently bought a Toyota and reading on a Toyota forum I read how horrible the V6 is and how they burn oil too. Mine doesn't burn any. I guess I'm just lucky.

If someone comes by to look at your bike and test rides it and then tries to lowball you by telling you that its an 08 and that it will probably need rebuilt because the 08's burn oil. Kick him in the nuts and tell him to get lost. He knew what year it was before he came to look at it.

There is a point in '09 serial numbers where Kawasaki changed piston/rings to the new design. Don't remember the number though.
My 2009 has almost 10,000 miles, and has never used oil, including an 1100 mile trip last month. No oil was added or needed.

I just paid $2800 for an 06 with 30,000km on it. Progressive rear shock and performance brakes, engine and rad crash bars wih highway pegs and a few other upgrades and a set of barely used street tyres.

That said I think around $3500 - 3800 sounds like a pretty fair price for what you have.

2008 Kawasaki KL650E8F KLR 650 Prices and Values - NADAguides

I'll suggest 'Average Retail' for a none oil burner, hard to 'Confirm'. Low retail for an oil burner.
Suggested list price was when brand NEW, plus fgt, assy, prep, docs. 0-20 miles.

Modify at "YOUR OWN RISK"!

Still riding my 1987 KL650-A1. 85,000+ miles & counting
