fast tapping noise...

i used to have a cutlass with a 350 in it, sometimes when i would floor it the engine would make a tapping noise. i think i learned that the noise was from the "lifters" or "valves", im no gearhead persay...

anyway, i have noticed this a few time on my KLR. usually at the end of the shift range for me, around 4500. also when under load or going up hill and giving it the berries it will wind up nicely then hit the tapping sound. its not incredibly loud like the engine is falling apart, actually at first i thought it was a rattle from radiator area.

i guess my first instinct was that maybe i needed to check the valves, may need shims.

my bike is an '05 and i have 6600 miles on it.

any ideas?
thanks.

I had to change all four shims at 6000k on mine. It also could be some piston slap at those RPM's or detonation. You might try a grade higher fuel and see if you notice a decrease in the noise. Normally noisey valves are a good thing on KLR's.

Previous ride was a 2007 KLR Black/Silver, I miss it..
Looking to get back into KLR's sometime soon.

I agree with trying higher grade fuel or octane booster. Don't know about the KLR and predetonation, but I'll bet that's what you were hearing in the 350.

How's your engine temp when you're hearing this? An overheated engine can cause this.

Sounds like the exhaust might be loose at the head.

Valves get tighter over time, should have been checked and adjusted a coupla times by 6600 miles.

Doo done?

i did the doo with Paper and AA this spring.
i adjusted the screw tonight and took her for a ride. seems to have done the trick. its almost like i got another gear out of it, since i used to shift when it got to that snare sound at about 4500 rpms.
i will definately study marknets step by step and do the valves this fall.
shes running great right now!
thanks for the help!

Same problem on my '07 from the get go. I stared using 92 octane or better and it went away.

mine had the dreaded spark knock(detonation)except when i ran 93octane, but since i put the Jardine pipe on and re-jetted i can run 87 even on the hottest days, w/no spark knock all the way to 6500rpm

I bet your loose chain was making contact with the inside of the case, with the adjuster doing it's job. Great catch!!
