Smile Chadwick ORV on a KLR!!

I spent the past weekend riding the trails at Chadwick ORV in Southern Missouri on my '09 KLR650. I'm not trying to make a case that this bike makes such a feat easy, but I can honestly say that I (and my riding partners on real dirtbikes) am amazed where this bike can take me, and back. I have very minor modifications in place (smaller front sprocket, Dunlop D606's, headlight guard, crash bars, side cover guards, master cylinder guard, aluminum skid plate, no mirrors). That is it. Yes, the bike still weighs over 400 lbs. Yes, it too short and cases out on rock ledges. Yes, the suspension is too soft and will hit the stops if you push too hard. But on the plus side, it pulls hard climbing snotty, rocky hills, and it never fails to start, even when dropped.

I grew up riding actual dirtbikes, and aspire to buy another one soon, but the KLR can and does scratch the off road itch, if you are always aware of its size and limitations and ride around them.

I would love to hear from others who do the same and can offer any additional mods and tips?

Cheers!

PW

Savage,
I assume that you have been to Chadwick ORV and are not a fan of the routes.
I have No Idea of the area, but you both ought to come and play in our local 'rock pile'.

There are a LOT of places I would like to go ride. But my lack of planning, and work have kept me local. "Some day" I keep telling myself.

I need a GoPro, for sure! This is the 2nd trip down there with the KLR. Can't lie, it was hard, but a lot of fun. Stay on the pegs to minimize the lack of suspension and excess weight. Choose lines carefully. Keep momentum, if at all possible. We even traversed a Black Diamond trail, although not on purpose! It rained so much our planned route was flooded, so we had to follow the only trail we could. Luckily it wasn't until after we got off the Black that we saw the tag. It would have psyched me out, otherwise!

All that being said, as soon as I save some play money I am buying an actual dirt bike, again. The KLR will always have a home with me, though!
