Love your KLR + back injury = time to modify

Hey KLR lovers, first post but longtime lurker.
I bought a 2014 New edition KLR last June and suffered a back injury less than six weeks later. I have no plans to sell it, but even after the surgery, the ride is still a bit rough for long range. My son is returning from Okinawa next month and all we have been talking about is getting up in the hills of Virginia for a week or so and getting lost. I am forced to concede that my off road days are at an end, but is there anyone who has made the transition to a more street friendly KLR? I am 6'7 so there really isn't any other bike that rides the way a KLR does, even my DL1000 sits too aggressively for comfort (with risers).
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and nice to meet everyone.

TheJay,
Not sure which bike mods might help your situation. Maybe handlebar risers?
Maybe High Dollar suspension?

First I'll suggest, padded bicycle shorts and a good kidney belt/back brace!

ps,
The 'Preview' has a new 'center' format. First time I've seen it.
pps,
And now it don't! Who is playing with 'things'???

I use a back brace/belt. The shorts I hadn't thought of, thanks for the tip.

How about a big duffel bag on back seat for back rest.
