Tires and gas mileage

Just bought a 2006 KLR and it is my first bike so I am pretty new to the motorcycle scene. I am wondering if the type of tire I am using affects the gas mileage and if so by how much? and does anybody mix types of tires? I just have a street set on and I am looking to do some adventure riding and am wondering what tires I should get and if I should mix? I will have to drive on the street to get to the trails so I cant go all dirt with the tires.

I went from Shinko 244's which are rather soft, knobbed 50/50 tires run around 30 psi (I think) to the Kenda 761 which is harder, street-oriented tire run at 36 psi.

I didn't switch tires in an attempt to increase my gas mileage and don't really care about mileage, but decided to check it anyway with the new tires and mpg's were the same.

I theorized that less "rolling resistance" would result in higher mpg's, but it was not the case with me.

Tire type may affect efficiency some. I'm with planalp that it isn't significant for me.

I get good enough efficiency with large-knob TKC80 tires. I use those tires when I'm using more trails and fewer high-speed roads. The KLR is also a tall bike and encourages sitting tall for a big frontal area. Plus it's as aerodynamic as a brick. The whole aerodynamic package is so bad that tires are not significant.

I don't mix tires although others do. I usually choose tires for whatever trails I'll be on. They may wear faster on the road ($$) but a road tire that slips on the trail is a deal-killer.

Most of my first 2 years on my KLR were with the Kenda 761 that planalp mentioned. Good road tire that was fine for the easy trails I was on then. When my current tires wear out I'll probably put on 761s again since I'm not using ATV trails so much this summer.

The old worn out Michelin's on the bike when I bought were great for mileage because I was afraid to use a lot of throttle with them.

On the other hand my new Avons have caused the mileage to drop considerably goings from 50mpg to 40mpg.

This probably seems like a stupid question but what size should I get? I'm looking at kenda 761s and I'm seeing 3.00-21 front and 5.10-17 rear. That will work on any bike or do I have to get a specific set?

I always see the Kenda 761 available in metric sizes: 90/90-21 front and 130/80-17 rear.

If you give them the inch sizes you'll probably get the right size anyway. Those are the correct inch sizes for the KLR.

Same as MJ90 21 front and MT90 17 rear.
