I just filled my new KLR for the first time today. Hit reserve at a few tenths shy of 240 miles. Put 4.97 gallons in the tank about 10 miles later. So, I got a little over 50 MPG, which seems decent for the first tank on a new engine. I need to run a few tankful to get a decent MPG average before trying for the 300 club.

I have an XR650L now, I've only hit 100 once... I sure miss that KLR tank.

I just installed the thermo bob. I’m at 795 miles and am going to fill up soon. First FULL tank with the bob. I’m gonna push it this time!

Just so you know.
Before you actually have to 'push it', you can lay the bike Down on its LH side and take advantage of its "secret Reserve"!

That is the 1/2 gallon which can't get over the center hump of the frame & fuel tank indent, with-out some manual intervention.

300 mile + club!

Hooray - I made the 300 mile + club doing slow speeds on mostly road with some trail riding around Lolo Pass!

305 miles (Kooskia ID - Hamilton MT) / 4.79 gal = 63.7 mpg!

Went over 300 several times in the 6 years since I bought my 09. Used secret/super secret reserve once at 345, filled up 4 miles later. (who knew that station was just around the corner?)
Usually fill up at 200 ish, usually average 58 - 62 mpg, riding in the Piedmont in NC/SC. got 62.3 going to the Tail of the Dragon from the Charlotte area using back roads staying at the 55 mph speed limit.
I rarely shift over 4000 rpm, and rarely exceed the posted speed limit. I am a 4x4 driver safety and motorcycle safety instructor for my organization, looks bad if I get tickets!
I gave almost a gallon to a guy on a Harley Sportster in the middle of no where SC once. I was at 245 miles. (Is there a special award for that?) We made it to the next station about 5 miles down the road. Even after teasing the guy he filled my tank and his for helping him. Some Harley guys are nice!

I think it would take considerable effort for me to get in this club. With normal riding over about a 5 day period, the best I have seen on a completely stock bike was 235 miles before reserve. I don't think my reserve will ever take me another 65 miles, even with a tailwind.

This thread is both interesting and helpful.

By doing some quick math when I first got my bike, I thought 6 gallons at 50 miles per gallon meant 300 was a given.
So imagine my dismay when it sputtered out at 272 miles last week.
But the fun/good news is that I was looking at a gas station when it happened, and literally coasted up to the pump. It took 4.82 gallons.

I rarely ride above 60 mph, and usually shift around 4000 rpm.
From my rough estimates, Im averaging right around 55 mpg.

I'm hoping to get it all dialed in soon and take a trip down the Pacific Coast with the Redwoods as a destination. I'll refuel around 200 miles, just so I don't have to worry about it.
But someday, I'm gonna make it into the 300 club.

(btw, riding a 2010 with 7000 miles)
