Looking to buy, 08 KLR, Chicago, few Q's

First time poster/rider here. I am looking to buy an 08 KLR in the Chicago area. So far all, but one, of the dealers I have contacted do not have any bikes in stock and say they wont have any bikes any time soon. I found a blue one today and sat down to talk numbers with the sales guy. He gave me this whole routine about their popularity and cant do too much with the numbers. He quoted me at 6000 OTD. Does this sound like a fair deal or are their areas I can squeeze them on?

Also is there any reason to wait for the 09s and will there be any different color choices?

Any other first time rider/buyer tips would be greatly appreciated. Until then I will keep browsing around here and researching

Sounds like typical dealer talk, tho if that were here (Texas) and included tax, title and license and other fees, that wouldn't be too awfully high, from what I've read and heard about 08 deals.

Watch craigslist. Should be lots of KLRs from time to time in your area.

There are lots of KLRs around. Call up Kawasaki and ask them for 15 dealers phone numbers in your area. Call up each dealer and ask them what their out the door price is.

I'd go with one that 1. has a good price 2. is close by and 3 has a good service record.

Yah I have been checking craigslist regularly for the last two months, there always are a few for sale.
How much concern should there be buying a used bike? I kind of like the idea of going brand new and knowing exactly how the bike was used and broken in.
The MSRP for these are 5349.00 or whatever. What would a dealer typically buy them for? I want to know so i can try to figure out the margins they are making and whats a reasonable counter offer?

Around here counter offers are welcomed with a "sorry but can't help you" due to the high demand for the bikes. They know someone will be in within a day or two and purchase the bike no questions asked.

If you're serious and ready to buy, go sit down, put your checkbook on the table (or better yet a stack of $100's) and start talking. Otherwise, you must realize the sales guy deals with 40 tirekickers per day and until you show him some money, you're not a buyer.

I'm a real estate broker (retireing, yeeha) so know more about the sales profession than I would really like to. Pro salespeople can't spend much time with a person unless they've qualified him as a buyer. While they're chitchatting with a looker, a buyer might be missed (i.e. on to the next salesperson or down the street to the other dealer). There's plenty of exceptions to this rule but it will generally hold true.

The story was the same for me when I was looking for an '08 KLR. No one within 100 miles had one in stock. Fortunatley one of the first dealers I had contacted, called me and told me they got one in. If you go to kawasaki's website, you can search for local dealers. I contacted all of the local shops in my area. Since demand is high, I would not expect them to wheel and deal too much. I didn't even try. I just paid the asking price. Six large OTD doesn't sound too bad. Good luck though. i think you'll like the bike whether it's an '08 or '09. By the way, I'm in South/Central Pennsylvania.

Just got back from local dealer (picking up part). Visited with their sales manager. They hadn't had a KLR or Versys for several months and got MSRP for them all year if there was no trade. So he said.

I don't blame any dealer for wanting maximum dollar. They only get so many of the KLR's which means they can only make so much from them. As already been said, they are out the door fairly quickly so why loose $200 when the bike will sell within a week anyway.

The only pitch you can hope for is to encourage the current salesman to sell it to you today for your price or the next guy that comes in might end up buying from a different salesman. I would assume these places still function on some kind of commission still.

When I was looking, I had to buy from a dealer 40 miles away and he only had the one green 06 left when I called. I told him to go ahead get it ready for me and I'll pick up Saturday. $5200pretax. The local dealer wanted quite a bit more AND!! I would have to wait some unknown time period before they even got one in.... NO THANKS!

Give Ryan at FHK a call. Last I knew they had a red '08 available for like 5199 plus tax. The number is 815-235-7549. They're only a couple hours west of Chi-town.
