Hey All

Every Winter I like to purchase a bike and either restore it to its former glory or customize it to suit a very specific purpose.

Last year I turned a very hum-drum Ducati 696 into a Tri-Color street racer. The year before that I built a custom M109R drag bike. The year before that was a 1956 BMW R26.

This year I have planned a round trip on the well know Trans Labrador Highway. This 4000+ KM trip will take me from St. John's Newfoundland, through Labrador, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and back through the center of Newfoundland via the Abandoned Railway bed. I will be leaving in June of 2016. It will involve at least 2300 KM's of gravel and should be a real test for any motorcycle.

My whole idea with this build was to construct a KLR650 that could withstand the apocalypse and still go looking for more. I want to build an absolutely bullet proof bike that is as tough and simple as a bag of nails. The AK47 of motorcycles if you will.

I will post pictures as I progress on this forum. Please remember to leave your comments, thoughts or suggestions as I go. :)

Without further ado, here is the brand new 2015 KLR650 I am starting with:

May I insert the critical/sarcastic comment here now?

When the apocalypse goes down, so will the governments GPS satellites. Get a simple compass and keep it on board as a backup. No batteries, and will work when you have to hoof it out of the back country.

(Great looking bike! Keep it going)

You need some polished and oiled 1/2" round, 3-foot steel spikes affixed to the forks to impale footborne threats without wasting valuable ammunition. Perhaps you could incorporate them with the Eagle Mike fork brace.

A quick pull of the clutch and a steady but not overly-aggressive application of the front brake lever should slide their carcasses right off the impalement rods onto the pavement in front of you without losing front wheel control so you can continue your journey to The Safe Zone without the added weight and stench on the front end.

You might want to consider stainless lines and an oversized front rotor for maximum corpse-dislodging dynamics. Rotella 15-40 performs flawlessly as an impalement rod lubricant under the temperature conditions you would most likely encounter.

I would suggest Shinko 244's as they provide excellent traction on blood-covered human flesh. I'm talking first-hand experience here, not the BS "reviews" we're accustomed to reading on dualsport motorcycling supply sites. Those people don't know what they're talking about.

Your shop looks amazing. If this is an apocalypse/doomsday bike, then you need to ground out your shop if you already haven't.

You need to put a nice steel or copper cage surrounding it and make sure anything inside of it is grounded out if it is electrical. Don't want any of that blowing when the EMP comes. ;)
