Starter motor gremlin

One bad day last summer, my '97 KLR's starter motor continued to crank after the engine was running, and kept cranking even after I killed the engine, even with ignition and kill switches in OFF position. I'm fine with a wrench, but I'm crap with electrical problems. Thanks for any help.

Problem would be with ignition switch or starter relay. My bet is the relay.

Just disconnect the ignition wire at the starter relay and see if it's energized when you turn the ignition key to start (use a tester, don't spark it to ground). If it is and zeros out when you turn the key off it's the relay. Just replace it. If it doesn't zero out, it's the switch. That would be good -- then you have a reason to upgrade the switch to the "Afrika" model.

Thanks BIGIRON, but...

Remember that I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed electrically. The tester you mention--continuity tester or multimeter? Reason I ask is that the bulb on the former would either be lit or not, whereas the latter could show a zero. I've got a lot of time on the multimeter because I had to track down a short on my old Ninja.

Again, thanks for contributing to my education. --jtn606

Either one, you're just testing continuity.

Thanks. btw, where do I find an "Afrika" ignition switch if mine's bad?
