Did the 22cent Mod tonight! Sweet.

So I did the 22 cent mod tonight on my 97. Well ok it was more like the $4 mod because I had to buy a drill bit too. I haven't ridden it yet because its 20 degrees outside but just the response and throaty gurgle and pop off throttle is something I had been missing since getting the KLR. My DRZ400 and XR650 had this and I was wondering where it was on the big Kawi thumper, Found it! I was surprised how much I had to back off the idle screw to get it to come down after the mod. But before it would sputter and spit at 1250 RPM. Now it sits at 1000 RPM perfectly with a nice exhaust note. I hope it rides as awesome as it sounds!!!!

Many thanks to those who gave instructions!

I think you'll find it rides as good as it sounds and feels. Keep us posted.

What things did you do?
How many .000" did you raise the needle?
How many turns was yuor idle jet air screw turned out (stock)?
How many turns did you turn the idle jet air screw?

I raised the needle .050 (two washers)
I drilled the air hole 7/64"
I turned the Idle jet air screw 2 1/8th turn out from stop.
The stock setting was 1 turn and change.
I removed the snorkle from the air box.

After the mod the idle was up to around 1600 rpm and didn't want to come down very fast after hitting the throttle. So I had to turn back the idle speed screw back a few turns (not the air jet screw the actual idle adjustment screw) to get it to come down to 1000rpm and now it drops right back down off throttle and sits at 1000rpm with no surges or sputtering.

That is the second one I have seen or heard that was set at 1 turn. Watch your gas mileage. You can always remove one of the washers.

Nice to have a KLR that runs and performs better for almost no dollars.

Good job.

As a side note to the 22cent mod. I'm running the stock exhaust with tweety removed. I used the dremel to the core trick to get him outta there. It takes alot of patience getting the core out this way as you have to make the core smaller then it's original size to get it out of the hole. However I didn't have to do any mods to the end of the pipe this way which saved time, money, and kept the stock look of the pipe. I didn't want the frankenpipe look to the stocker. Just keep on twisting that core (in one direction) until it twists up small enough to get it out. Between that and the 22 cent mod you can have a better running bike that sounds and feels like a real thumper. If anybody's looking to do these things and has any questions let me know. I just did both of these last week so the process is still fresh my my head.
