Yours is either an '87 or an '98, so your CDI is supposed to be the one before the Y/R wire was introduced.
Two things. Be aware that the early Gen 1 CDI had no Y/R wire; if you go to source a new one you'll need to be mindful of that. Check to make sure that a previous owner, unaware of the Y/R phenomenon, didn't source a later CDI.
You should also confirm that you are getting fuel into the carburetor bowl. Crack the drain screw to check.
Check the valve lash; too tight = very hard starting.
While the valve cover is off, check the valve timing.
I don't have a Gen 1 and have no practical experience with their ignitions to offer, but I post this up on the chance you have no manual to refer to.
It's going to be a troubleshooting routine checking for air, fuel, and spark at the right time.
