From the IBA site: In 1993, Doug Packard finished the Iron Butt on a Kawasaki KLR 650 dual-sport motorcycle to become the first single cylinder motorcycle to complete the Iron Butt Rally.

And that was the 10-day Rally! Since then, serveral have compeleted the SS1000 and other IBA rides on a KLR.

All apologies for reeling this conversation back to the initial question!

Wow, I'm surprised the old Triumph made it 1,700 miles without some sort of problem, be it with the AMAL carburetors of the infamous Lucas rectifier!

Congratulations!

I've done a few SS1000 rides on my Super Tenere. Pretty easy to do.
My BMW riding buddies and I did 1350 over 2 days to eat crawfish. I think that took less than 40hrs.

I'm planning to soon do the Ride Around Georgia SS1000 on my KLR soon. It's got the 685 kit to stop its thirst for oil ,(its ab 08). I'll put a 16t front sprocket on for the trip.

The earlier I leave, the better. When the ride drags on into the early morning, it starts dragging me down.

I rode from Sacramento CA to Midland TX in 3ish days (getting a Corbin low rise seat at Hollister), sleeping at Edwards AFB and Davis Monthan AFB along the way. 1700 miles all in all..

Squeeze a 17 in there if you want to feel the KLR in a fully relaxed highway mode. Slightly better gas mileage and chain life are additional benefits. Just don't plan any observed trials contests.

If you are riding mostly highway, a 16t front and 42t rear really gets the rpm down for interstate travel. I run this setup all the time as 90% of my riding is on rode. 58 to 62 mpg depending on speed. In fact speed has more to do with the mpg than whether I am in mountains of flatland.
