Wider front tire?

I'm really getting into my bike offroad, touring all over backwoods areas. The biggest problem I see with handling is going downhill on soft ground. Has anyone tried a wider front tire, using it on the existing rim? It seems like this would help with front end stability and handling off road.

The stock tire size is the largest 21" dot tire that is available. If you want wider you'll have to go to an 18" or 19" wheel.
