Rear suspension lower 1"

I am looking at a progressive shock that is 1" lower than stock. If I install this shock do I have to install 1" lowering links with it or are they completely separate items? I know there are a ton of threads out there but I cannot seem to get one with this specific answer. Thanks for the help.

If the shock is physically shortened/lowered then you can use it with the stock links. .....If you used lowering links in addition to a shorter shock, it would be even lower yet.
