Choosing a first time bike

I'm a new rider who doesn't currently have a bike. I'm about 6'3" 220 and have tried sitting on lots of different options. I really would like a dual sport, mostly for the seat height/posture and the KLR650 would be my ideal bike.

The big issue for me budget, I only have around $2000. In my area (Kansas City) I haven't seen anything that is anywhere near that amount. Most of the used KLRs I've seen are in the $4000 range.

Any ideas or alternative bikes that might make sense for me? Do you happen live in my area and know of someone who wants to part with an older KLR? I've looked at a couple of Buell Blasts but they feel awfully small for a guy my size.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

You'd bee awfully big for a Blast. Just sit back and keep shopping (easy to say, hard to do) and wait for the deal to come along that's right for you. You'll fit on a KLR just fine, but you'd be very uncomfortable on something the size of a Blast.

Bide your time you'll find a KLR to fit your budget. Keep an eye on Craigslist.

Agreed. Lots of people selling off vehicles right now. Patience and you'll find one. Or someone you can talk down, trade, etc.

You're not too far off -- something will come along. Craigslist is best. If you have some skills, carpentry, etc you might offer to barter some of the price.

The Blast is a great little bike for what it was made for. If I spend 20 minutes on my wife's, it takes me a couple of hours to recover.

Thanks

Thanks for all the input guys. I appreciate your insight.

How do you feel about the KLR250? I would be doing about 85% on the road and 15% on gravel and dirt roads. Would that bike be a good around town bike or should I wait and try to get a 650? Could it handle a guy of my size.

Thanks again!
