Reasonable Markup

My local dealer is charging $5600 for an 09 and $900 in fees. My first motorcycle purchase. $900 seems rediculous to me. What is a reasonable markup?

If I can find it cheaper nearby should I buy it there? And still expect good service at the local dealer?

I would like to work with the local dealer. And want to get started on the right foot. But I do not want to get screwed.

Well, they sure as hell don't appear to be starting out on the right foot so I don't see why you should. That pricing is outrageous. Not only is it MSRP, but those fees are insane. You'd have to file a rape charge if you walk out of there with that deal.

If the $900 in fees is tax, title, license, etc then that's not too bad. TTL here in Texas would be about $600 or so. But if it's for setup, transportation, etc then that's BS.

I think you'll find that dealer competency, customer service and such vary widely with most on the lower end of the scale (according to my experience and what is generally reported in posts).

I'd buy the bike at the best price and a Clymer manual and try to never visit any dealer.

I think that included everything. Final price was $6500. That was a verbal quote. So not sure what the real final price would be. I guess I should head on down and see what they say.

I requested an online quote from Star City Motorsports in Lincoln Nebraska last week for OTD cost of an '09, $5465. Print out an online quote from another dealer to bargain with your local dealer. Not that they are trying to screw you but they are trying to maximize profits. Same as I do in my business. No need to be shy about trying to get a better deal, just don't make it personal and you can still have a great relationship with your dealer.
