compare '09 to earlier bikes?

I've decided to buy a KLR 650. Why would I buy a new '09 verses an earlier bike? Is the '09 technically superior, do the earlier engines have a balance shaft etc. etc. This will be bike number 28 or 29 for me, and number 4 or 5 for kawabongas . I ride both road and dirt, probably 80/20 but like a lighter bike. I am NOT a harley person.

There was just a thread on this. You can probably search for it. If not, let me know and I'll find it. I'm late.

Hey BP,

You can probably get the upgrade info right from Kawi's online brochure. I have an '08 with near 14 k on the odometer. As far as an '08 compared to an '09 I'm not sure of the changes. Before '08 the changes were pretty substancial. A lot has been written on the '08 to earlier comparisons so I won't rehash any of that. The '08 is great on the road. Good for semi tame off-roading but at the same time it's real heavy in the dirt. I'm 230lbs and in decent shape and my klr is no fun to get into places you have to wrestle the bike to get thru.

my 2 cents........good luck,
Rick
