Surging at cruising speed

OK maybe you guys can help, I have an 04 klr650 . The bike runs perfectly fine at idle and at wide open throttle. now cruising in 3-4-5 gear @ 2500-4000 rpms the bike surges, no that you can see in in the tach, but i can feel it in the seat of the pants, now when its happening i move the choke lever over to full choke the surge goes almost away, not completely gone but close. i have the .22c mod, uni filter, L mod, snorkel removed, and the pilot screw under the carb set @ 2 1/2 turns out. Also too the muffler apart and got rid of the center and got rid of the "tweet"

now i tried putting the snorkel back in and put the screw back in 1/2 turn to 2 turns, and its still there.

The bike just turned 5100 miles with no other issues.

I think its running too lean but when i tried to run the screw at 3 turns its the same.

You would be correct it is running lean on the needle. Do you have one or two washers on the needle? If just one, add another. If you have two on there then it's time to consider installing a KLX needle.
On a side note, how is your chain tension? A chain that is too tight and or not lubed can create a surging sensation very similar to a lean surge.

Funny you say that, I just put on new tires last night and re adjusted the chain and its the same. I have .060 thou. washers on the needle.

Take the uni filter off and put the stock filter back on. It flows better than most aftermarket filters, and will richen you up a bit. Is worth a try and is free.

Previous ride was a 2007 KLR Black/Silver, I miss it..
Looking to get back into KLR's sometime soon.

Dx is right, the stock filter might restrict the air enough to fix the surge.

Just wondering... when you did the 22 cent mod did you drill the slide.

My '06 was doing the same thing after the .22 mod. What I found on mine was that the vacum line to the petcock was loose and that the hose was shot alltogether. A new hose cured mine. Good luck getting it running right again.

If all else fails plug the hole in the slide(JB weld) and re drill to stock diameter
