Torque Wreches Tested - Harbor Freight

I've owned and used the HF 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" torque wrenches for about five years. Read good reviews but always had that "$16 torque wrench" feeling in the back of my head when using.

This week our metrology shop got two new torque analyzers. I brought all three wrenches in today and we ran them through the settings.

1/4" in/lb tested at 35, 55, 100 and was within the 2.5 in/lb increment on the scale
3/8" ft/lb tested at 20, 60, 80 and was also within the 2.5 ft/lb increment on the scale
1/2" ft/lb tested at 85, 100, 120, again within the increment of 2.5 ft/lb

In fact most all broke right on. We both ran the tests and repeated (sorry, no official gage R&R). The metrology guy was impressed and commented on his box of Craftsman and Snap On wrenches.

I'll note, we did a few "back off tests" in case we run into reverse threads. The readings were a bit higher here with 5 in/lb and 5 ft/lb being seen repeatedly...
i.e: Set at 80 ft/lb the scale stated 85 ft/lb

Got a doo to do in a couple more thousand miles and will feel a little better knowing these results.

Excellent information.
Any chance that anyone brought in any OLD dial gauge or balance beam wrenches to test?

Excellent info on those HF wrenches, I've always wondered about them. Having spent 15+ years actually working as a mechanic, I have that collection of Snap-On torque wrenches that were sent in to be "calibrated" a couple of times. I would love to know how they test out on those scales. Could have saved a lot of money had I known this back then.
I started out with an old K-D 1/2" micrometer style wrench (50-250lb) that a buddy borrowed and brought back with the handle backed off all the way. Never did work right after that.

The test units we bought are used to check "preset" torque used in our manufacturing areas. So, no beams or others to test.

Great writeup on HF torques. I ended up buting a Titan 3.8 torque wrench, as a half inch is not needed on a motorcycle.
