KLR 08 oil useage

I have a 08 KLR, bought from the dealer w/4300mi and I have put 5200mi on it since 1-09. I am having to add 1qt about every 1100 mi . The dealer said this was not out of the norm for the 08. My wife has a 09 ...from the showroom floor 000mi now has 4000 and maybe has used 1/4 of a quart between 2 oil changes. Anybody else have this expierence with their 08?

AFR,
Scott

There were a bunch of pistons and rings replaced on the '08 under warranty. You might want to talk to your dealer about opening a claim and getting ti repaired.

Talking

I have an 08 with almost 6000 miles. I very rarely need to add any oil. Really, I think I only did once when I did many miles of road riding in one day at 60 MPH.

Maybe Iím just very lucky!

love my KLR can't say enough good about it. I've had a 750 honda, 650 yamaha, 650 suzki, and a harley sportster but none of them can beat my 650 KLR.

My '08 that is thrashed on a regular basis, uses maybe a 1/2 quart between oil changes (2 to 3 K) more if I have ridden a lot at a sustained cruising 5K + RPM which BTW is really asking a lot of this bike. I've never had to add oil to keep it between the lines. Not unmanageble if you check the level at gas stops. That is regular maintenance. Now, on the other hand if you need a whole quart every fill up you do have a problem.

I did do the PCV mod and noticed a slight reduction in oil usage, nothing of major consequence. It just made good sense for a single cylinder engine.

Jeez, if it aint between the lines put some oil in it.

+1. My bike doesn't seem to guzzle oil, but if it's low, I add some. And then I ride and don't think about it.

My 08 uses 1/2 quart with a tank of fuel. When I told the dealer their answer was thats normal. I say BS to that.
I have the 685 kit for the cure. All I need to do is find the time to do the job.

some '08's use oil...it's a common report on KLR chat forums...the dealer will fix it if you see to it he does it....but it might use oil again even more after the fix....685 is the only real cure

I got rid of mine just because of this issue. It had new rings installed and it used more after the rings and valve seals were done. Insist on a new piston also. I had an 07 and 08 650 both had oil issues under nowmal riding it was fine upper rpms it would drink the oil. Wait till the warrenty is up and do the 685 kit it solves the problem.
