About the 08 KLR, Let's Get Real

I just finished reading the posts to the thread about the 08's being ugly among other things. I thought Kawasaki was aiming at a more Euro looking BMW thing with their new design. I kinda like the look. (Incidentally I know that 'kinda' is not a word)

As far as the bike being a dedicated 'Dirt Bike' or for anyone to complain that it is not seems out of place when referring to the KLR. Most of us who bought them had no intention of riding open class motocross with them or racing them at all. Myself I just liked the *HUMVEE like appearance of the old style. *(High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) I don't know anyone who bought a HUMVEE or a Hummer 2 or 3 who uses them the way the military does. With that in mind I don't find it surprising that most KLR owners (I did say most not all) use their bikes for casual gravel road and back-road touring not hardcore dirt work.

If I had the bones and the flesh and muscle to do hardcore dirt work I would want a KLX 450 not a KLR. By the way I raced open class Moto in district 6 in the 70's and I ran TT 500 Yamaha's like the one in this picture. These were not good Motocross bikes but after modding them out they sure as hell were fun to run.

I guess that is how I feel about my full dress KLR, it's fun. It is my HUMVEE.

As for the slick new 08 / 09's, I like them and if I owned one it would be my Hummer or maybe more like an affordable Range Rover. I would like to have a KTM 950 or the like but I feel that it would only serve to stroke my ego and not turn me into a fire-breathing dirt mongering maniac. If I didn't like my KLR I'd get rid of it and buy an 06 Concours. I thought they were about the sweetest sport touring ride I'd ever seen.

This is me, I ride in Alaskan weather and I keep my bike clean;

Hardyreels: I gotta agree with you, the bike is what it is. I look at mine as a 2 wheeled version of my 4wd F150. It's not the best at long trips but it does them, not the best off road but it handles that too. And I like the looks of the new ones. Yeah, Kawasaki probably was looking to make it reminiscient of the BMW GS series but I like the looks of them also. Ride safe and enjoy the ride. Oh, and where did you get the front fender, I been thinking about getting something like it.

OK, multiple response post here;

MetalBender, I know why I like your bike, it looks like my old TT's. If I enjoyed tire changing more I'd run knobbies like yours I love the way they look and the way they dig mud.

Sbrogdon, UFO plastics; search for 'Superbike fender'

Lockjaw, kinda is a make believe word that I use almost as often as 'Gotta'

You gotta do what you gotta do. I'm just saying, the rest of us are trying to elevate the conversation with erudite, pithy terms like "farkle".

Shit, I gotta go to work.
