Side stand strength for Pivot Turns?

I was listening to a podcast today on how to use your side stand for a pivot turn.

Basically tilting the bike so both wheel are off the ground and the weight is supported only by the side stand, allowing you to turn the bike 180 degrees.

I believe the side stand on my 2016 is a hollow tube, (not 100% sure). Do you think the KLR side stand is strong enough to attempt this?

thanks
brian

Wow, I've never heard of that. IU'm still trying to figure out why the stand is so damn long. I guess for dirt, but on an incline the bike seems ready to tip over. Can't say I like it much. Seems very strong though.

Brian,
I would avoid doing the side stand pivot turn on a Regular basis. Why abuse a part that was not intended to be used in that manner?

patroy75,
If someone has installed lowering links on the rear suspension the side stand needs to be cut, shortened & re-welded.

I've seen it done, with a Generation 1, without trauma. YMMV!

I've been contemplating cutting mine and making it adjustable. I have raising links but sometimes the 3/4" block is too much.

I need an excuse to buy a welder. Can you point me to a pic of these lower links of which you speak? Found a video. So what is the purpose? Oh I see, ride height.

I do it on my Gen1's with no ill-effects so far......and if it broke, I'd just fix it - it's not a critical part.

It works no problem. Perhaps only abuse the stand when the trail is super tight but mine has been strong enough for me to perform this procedure with a loaded bike a number of times.

Side stands

Gen-2 2011 here. I lowered my bike 1" rear, and dropped front forks 1' too.
Cut OEM side stand, and inserted a 1 3/4 " bushing inside. (Set screws to hold it all together.) Large foot pad for added surface in dirt.
Seems quite strong.
I don't think I like the idea of putting that much strain, even on an unmodified stand. If I was in a situation where that was my only option, I may give it a try??

I would not do it "just because" I could. Best to plan to NOT get in a situation where that was your only option.
