Preserve or Restore

Hi guys! Still a forum rookie here so please give me any advice on posting properly.

I recently came into possession of a super low miles 2003 M1030b1 military klr (the gasoline one). It needs a gas tank and a stator but everything else is in tip top shape. This klr was originally a USMC Purchase like most of them but this one was unique as it was bought from the USMC later in its life by the USAF. I know this because its standard OD green and USMC lettering was painted over with air force grey and USAF lettering. Originally I wanted to do a full restore plus essential mods to its stock appearance from when it was a jarhead bike. A friend of mine opened my eyes to maybe giving it the flyboy restore, after all how many USAF klrs are even out there? Then another pal said I should just have fun with it and give it the appearance of a bike I myself would like to ride. Also a super fun project!

I was a marine myself and love the m1030b1. Anyways I'm torn this isn't an old beater that you turn into a bobber in the tool shed its kind of a piece of history right?

I'd appreciate any opinions or advice on the matter. Normally I'm way more decisive than this hehe.

Yeah I'm still too new to post pictures but I should be able to by the time I'm ready to start work on it.

I'd probably go with the AF restore for the sheer rarity of it. Though I must say your shared USMC roots would work as well.

Yeah I have never actually seen one other than this one but I know some exist, the unit it came from is supposed to have like 6 more but who knows. Also with most of the bikes grey paint job still intact it would be a lot easier than stripping it down.

Nice find!

I happen to have a stock Generation 1 stator and R/R (take-offs when I upgraded); pm if interested.

I'd stick with the USAF only because of the rarity and accuracy for the bike. Most people might not see it as a piece of history yet, but it is and/or will be. Cool bike either way!
