This may ne a stupid question, but...
 
First let me preface this by saying this is a brand new 2018 model and the bike seems to run fine. Last night after work it was dark when I got home. I got off the bike and as it was idling I noticed the exhaust head pipe was absolutely RED HOT. I have never had any motorcycle in 40+ yrs of riding motorcycle have the pipes glow red hot after riding less than 2 miles.. Or 200 miles for that matter. What would be the cause of this? Are the head pipes that thin and do these bikes run that frigging hot to turn them red hot like they've been heated by a torch?? Is this something to be concerned about? Makes me wonder about the aluminum in the head and whether it will last.
If you would , please ride your bikes and then stop in a dark area and look at your header pipe. Does yours also glow red hot?

Wow, nope, I've never seen that in my 40+ years either and I've owned harleys that get hot as hades. These bikes are running lean out the door but.. Seems like there would be a lot of popping too. The pipes do look pretty thin to me though. I've only owned mine for about three months so will be interesting to hear what others say.

The choke wasn't on, was it?

Choke would make it run cooler unless of course the aforementioned popping being the uncombusted petro igniting in the pipe.

Lean jetting, AIS system, thin header = red pipes at night.....hey, isn't there a nursery rhyme?....."red pipes at night, riders take warning?"...no? :-)

I may have to go for a spin tonight and see this. You know in three months, in 95 plus heat, in traffic, I have yet to hear my fan turn on. I have yet to get anywhere near the red mark.

I wouldnít be surprised with a glowing pipe as lean as these are set from factory.
I canít check my Ď16 since Iíve already richened it with mods.

Relax, it can be normal (dull red). Like Dave said. And it may require some further explanation.

If the cold start enrichner (choke) lever is left part way on, the Air Injection System (AIS) will cause the overly rich mixture to finish burning in the header pipe (Bright Red).

This was a bright red. Bright enough to be called alarmingly bright red. The enrichener wasn't left on as I always turn it off as soon as it will run on it's own. So, it is possible that it may be partially stuck open? If so, how would I be able to tell and how is it adjusted? I'd buy a Clymers, but they say they don't have one for the 2018 model and have no plans of publishing on in the near future.
