If you purchase a used head, one Must also receive the matched camshaft bearing caps which were machined with that head originally. This Can Be the reason the head is for sale, one maybe broken! Be careful.

1987 thru 2007 are mechanically identical, other than paint. The 2008 thru 2018 will need a little AIS block off plate near the spark plug. (EM sells them.)
Thank you for that info! That's what I needed!

OTOH, a new ('96+) cylinder isn't ridiculously expensive, and you could do the 685 kit at the same time you have the head off.

But there you go with even more added expense.

It has been said that most butt dynos can't tell the difference between 658, 661 or 685 kitted bikes. Other than the 658 & 661's are smoother running than the 685's. And they are all 3 smoother than an oem piston.

That's quite a problem. As I understand it, you rode the bike to the dealers (or trailered it). Doesn't matter, either way it was running. A month later it has a bad head. I would be checking the mileage to know how much it was ridden in that month. Was it used as a loaner or somebody's vacation ride. I certainly hope there were very few test miles ridden. Or are you saying that it will still run and crank like when you bought it
By the way, Engine Dynamics ( Mike) did a great job on a bad head for me. Good luck James

It is odd so much time passed before you were advised “the cam journals are toast” What’s the deal with that, Why did it take so long?

Yea, Dan the month wait was unacceptable!

I did end up buying a used head off Ebay. Just got delivered as we were going out of town for Turkey day so not able to inspect.

Squirt or pour some fluid into the ports to confirm good sealing of the valves or expose the need for re-conditioning of your purchase.

Or send it to these guys for a complete refurbishing. ENGINE DYNAMICS

They are the company that EM uses for major cam bearing repair. He does not do it in his own shop. And he is battling cancer, so e-mails and phone calls are on the back-burner. They can bore the cylinder for either an oem oversize piston or for the EM 661 JE piston kit. (I don't think EM sells the 658 anymore. Your pre 96 cylinder won't accept the larger 685 kit.) They have got to have the piston kit In Hand, maybe they can even supply them.
I'm with Paul. I had my head done at Engine Dynamics earlier this year, and they were great and did EXCELLENT work.
I would get "YOUR" head done to make it easy. It came off your engine, it's for that engine, it fits, no modifications needed, no questions about the fit.
And after ED gets done with it, it'll be better than new with those bearings installed.

Good luck with what ever you decide.
