First ride of the season.

Woke up the bike after this relentless Michigan winter and either I'm getting too old or it is still winter up here. I froze my ass off... She fired up after the carb filled and ran like she was never put up for the winter. It helps to treat the fuel, turn the gas off, run it till it starts to sputter then add the enrichener to suck all that gas out and after it dies drain what's left in the bowl.. I've always done that to everything I own from the tiller to the mower and even with the ethanol haven't had to mess with the carbs in the spring.

Lastly, can someone please tell me what the plastic thing with all the holes that wedges in on top of the air inlet snorkel is? Does it actually serve a purpose other than restricting airflow?

Garage
It keeps leaves and larger critters out. Also makes a decent screw and nut driver rack.

And the tabs on the top of that thingy serve to route the little tube that goes back to the "california box" if your bike is so outfitted…

That was exactly what I first thought.. Looking at it it looks just like the screwdriver rack that hangs on the side of my tool chest. Now for my next question.
Is the snorkel there to smooth airflow into the airbox or just to quiet down the intake?

The snorkel quiets the air intake some, but it does reduce the volume of available air flow.

But it is still breathing dustier air than necessary, off of the rear tire. By drilling 4 one inch holes in the top, straight cross-over section or cutting it completely open, it will breath less dusty air from under the seat. The air filter will stay cleaner longer.
