Lightbulb Diesel conversion kit?

I'm sure this has been a topic here before, but was wondering if anyone had experience with or is aware of any diesel conversion kits for KLR's. I know the military had them, but they are scarce and would be interesting in converting my bike if it was do-able.

KLR650s were converted under a Defense contract by a California company. Contract now completed/cancelled, AFAIK.

Know of no aftermarket "kits" for such a conversion.

Best bet for obtaining a Diesel KLR, in my view, is: Find a government surplus remainder from the original contract.

My knowledge/analysis/speculation is now exhausted; others may know of alternatives.

Much like the Versys transplant, the turbo projects, and the home-brew EFI (except for KLRChris' project), this is filed under "useless labors of love that didn't turn out well". Much like half the shit I do, I must admit...

I have not seen a well-done diesel conversion. What I have seen is a Kubota of which there is a YouTube video wherein the bikes weight was described as "a crap-ton", and a pull-start something or other that I can't find right now.

The military didn't do it because it was a great idea, they did it so that all of their vehicle fleets could run on the same fuel. In other words, for logistics and not for performance of any kind.

The Hayes was the only really clean version, of course. I recall that they were interested in selling them but the price tag, at a couple of times what a new, stock, KLR would cost just didn't pan out.

Still, they can be had. So can hen's teeth be had...

No, no kits or other easy way of making a diesel KLR......other than buying the original military ones that come up for sale once in a while for $10k+......personally, I don't need my KLR to make any LESS power so I have no interest. If range was the concern, an IMS 10 gall is relatively cheap.

Understood. I'm primarily interested in it as a potential end-of-the-world type set up, With a diesel, you not only get range, but you can also potentially run it on bio-diesel, and in some cases even from mineral oil that they put in electrical transformers you see along the highway. Not ideal, and not performance oriented, but there would be some big advantages if you couldn't get gasoline for whatever reason.

Not a bad idea, docholladay7, provided the EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) doesn't fry all your electronics!
