It's not difficult at all. It's in the owner's manual. Don't torque the plug to 21ft-lb. Use the old spec of 17ft-lb.

As long as it meets the specs, brand is largely irrelevant. I use Kawi oil, many use Rotella...
What IS important is to keep the oil level at the VERY TOP of the sightglass (bike off and level) and consider half way down LOW.

The "and JASO MA or MA1 or MA2" grading is the Most Important when consideration is given to the oil wet clutch assembly and starter drive clutch which the KLR and other bikes mostly use. Otherwise some oils may cause pre-mature slippage.

I would not recommend oil that is designed for diesel trucks....like Shell Rotella. Use a good MOTORCYCLE oil that is Jaso MA approved. My favorite is MOTOREX Top Speed 4T 10w40.

I don't use Rotella but I'd have no problem doing so. I need to keep this link handy - https://www.blackstone-labs.com/wp-c...Aug-17-ENG.pdf

ps. thanks to PaddyD for the original posting.

I use Bel Ray Thumper 10w40 Semi Synthetic. I also really Like Golden Spectro Semi Synthetic. My ZRX1100 and ST1300 shifted noticeably better with the Golden Spectro. My KLR isn't as finicky so I switched to the Bel Ray Thumper for the KLR because I can get it for $28.99 for a 4 liter jug which is just over $7 a liter and almost $4 a liter less than the Golden Spectro.

All better men than I. Motorex ? Bel ray ? For a KLR ? Why not just run some champagne?

Rotella is MA compliant last i checked.

Motorex is for my KTM cuz she is a little bitchy.

The KLR is my polish cleaning lady and she is just happy for a place in the garage and an occasional pat on the head.
