New to KLRs, looking at purchasing
Hi all, thanks for any advice! I’m looking at an ‘09. It’s got 40k on it, no service records, no history, for sale at a shop in town. It’s got an FMF pipe, pelican bags, adjustable windscreen, crash bars, rhino lined plastics, skid plate and I think aftermarket chain.
They are asking $2,499, think I can get it down a bit (bike wouldn’t start today when I went by for a spin😂😂. Supposedly after compression and leak down test they “forgot” to hook something up but I think the dude just flooded it. In any case they are looking into it). Pretty clean all around minus the mileage (and current no-start!). Shop is definitely a little fishy, not the greatest reputation. I also found the bike advertised in another state about 300 miles ago which doesn’t really jive with their story of “we bought it from a guy who was just getting too old to ride it and didn’t want it any more (supposedly the second owner)”
Am I crazy to buy it and roll the dice on the motor? Maybe the top end has already been done, even if not and I have to do it how much should I plan on saving for that? Planning on commuting about 30 asphalt miles/day on it and some trails/fire roads on the weekends. Eventually I’ll get to do some longer camping stuff (2 up) but I can’t help wondering if I’m better off waiting/watching for one with less miles and maybe less Farkle for more money but less risk?
Any input is appreciated! Also if anyone knows how to get previous owner info from the VIN I’d love to get in touch with them.
