Musings of a New Rider...

Nothing more than random thoughts about a month into my first bike (Gen 1 KLR)

- Hey I can actually make a turn from a stop without stalling!

- Where is 6th gear on this thing? (seriously, I have nothing to compare to but I find myself going for the next gear at 60)

- I need to get a helmet with a face shield and stop riding with my MX helmet that I used to use for quads

- Riding behind a big rig that you cannot pass that is hauling hay SUCKS... related to thought above

- Must stay on the road... but all those orchards and fields 15 feet to my right look so tempting

- If that itch on my ear does not go away pretty quick, I am going to need to pull over.

- It is so nice to not be able to look at or hear my phone... I am not doing blutooth

- I should have zipped up the vents in my jacket... Should I stop??? No I will be home in five minutes... (after leaving somewhere after the sun went down.

- I feel free!!! for a little bit at least

- Gee, I didn't realize it was this windy today

I wear ear plugs. I ignore the tach. I ignore the vibes. I shift up when the power tapers off. I shift down when I don't have enough torque to complete the task.
Higher gearing won't give me more top speed, because the (poor little engine that wished it Could) can't pull any harder against the wind resistance. Lower gearing helps in the rock piles, but limits my top-end speed, even on graded gravel roads in the middle of god forsaken no-where.

It's a freaking all-purpose bike with no Specific Purpose intended. Use it how ever you wish and "GO Ride Your Bike"!

Modify at "YOUR OWN RISK"!

Still riding my 1987 KL650-A1. 85,000+ miles & counting

Every 5 speed bike I have ever owned 450 -805 I have looked for the mythical 6th gear at various times. Funny thing about that 6th gear is it was seldom
Used when I owned a crotch rocket. I only looked for it to lower the rpms at my cruising speed not for more power or speed. Cobra pipes on the cruiser kind of droned on when cruising on the highway. I definitely get out and ride my bike. I am I’m
Atlantic Canada I have been riding my bike since March and only stopping when the snow and ice came back lol.

I cruise at about 60mph and it turns 4,000 RPM. That is about my top comfort speed right now... sometimes 65. Compared to my trucks 4,000 RPM seems like a super high cruising RPM. I know it is not but it is just how it feels. That said, if I were to have a 6th gear it would lug down at cruising speed if I tried to accelerate quickly. I do like the fact that I can roll the throttle back and it will jump ahead. I know people say this bike doesn't have much power and compared to some of the larger bikes it is probably very true. I know that it is faster than my old 7.3L PowerStroke.

As far as pdwestman's comment "Go Ride Your Bike"... I have increased the mileage on my bike by about 4% in the first month I have had it... about 300 miles so far. I am enjoying it.

It’s definitely a fun bike to ride. I like pdwestmans comment about wearing ear plugs. I used to wear them all the time on my last bike. Funny story hear out of a
Crappy situation. I was hit on my way home for work last year. I was going through an intersection and a suv turned into me. Got pretty hurt. Few days in the icu and a dozen (literally) broken bones. As I was laying in the ambulance I felt like I was yelling at the paramedics to answer their questions. I felt like they were yelling at me too. Halfway to the hospital it hit me. I had ear plugs in, so I say to the emt, hey can you
Do me a favour. He of course says sure, I say can you take out my ear plugs he does it and was cracking up. He says, man we thought there was something wrong with your hearing too. Lol.
