Clutch

Have become the proud owner of a 1992 KLR 650 (in Australia a Tengai model)
Never ridden one before. I've noticed that when in gear (motor off) moving the bike with the clutch lever pulled there is a lot of motor resistance is this normal. With the motor running and lever pulled there is no noticeable forward motion.

That is normal. The clutch discs will stick together when the motor has sat for a while.

If the motor is cold that's not unusual. The clutch discs tend to stick together. If the motor is warm, it indicated need for attention. Hopefully just adjustment, maybe more. Good luck.

That's also why you hear the "clunk" going into first.

Lucky you on the Tengai. Not many of them in the USA.

Previous information is right on. Take the time to clean the clutch cable and adjust it properly. Check both ends of the clutch cable for fraying.

How old is the oil? What weight oil are you using? How cold is the weather. Heck I forgot it is summer for AUS.

Heading for the middle of summer here. The bike is in good condition for the age. I do not know what has been done to the engine. The oil is clean and the fairings are in good shape. Its had a fall on the LHS shows some scraping. New to the site when I figure it out will post a few pics.
