OK, the KLR tech day is done. Here are some pictures.

The guys, less Tony behind the camera

Valve cover and caps off ready to put new shims in.

Did the MC Mod.

Got some liquid lard from Micky D's for oil.

See it isn't dirty.

Doo-Hickey before mod. After 12,500 km no tension left in spring.

New Doo-Hickey with torsion spring

Doing the main frame bolt mod. Boy is that frame thick!

All done. Want to thank everyone that helped and came by today. I am sure everyone learned something today. Don (aka Flash Gordon) for his stories, Dennis (aka Bigblock) on his secret on gaskets, Rod (aka Moonw5) with some spare tools that I was missing. and Tony (aka aLake) for taking the pictures.

And Thanks to MadKaw for dropping off a new set of tires for my South America ride.

Thanks everyone
Garry

Tips

When adjusting valves: draining the oil will cool the engine faster.

Reusing oil: put a plastic garbage bag in the drain pan. This will keep your used oil clean.

Pulled the exhaust off and painted it. The two threaded bungs on the header for the heat shield were stripped (hence the clamps that were on it) so I ground them off and welded on new nuts. Also touched up the paint on the frame.

Heard a funny clicking noise coming from the engine, not a constant clicking, hope it isn't a loose timing chain because of a failing doo...

Have you adjusted your balancer chain tension? Remove case cover plug; loosen 8 mm tension bolt a turn or two; re-tighten 8 mm tension bolt; button up. I'd hope in at least some cases, the process works, even with OEM parts.

The timing (cam) chain remains separate from the balancer chain, unaffected by the doohickey; chain slack automatically adjusted by the cam chain tensioner.

Installed the rear brake set up I got today and bled the system. Put the exhaust back on but I didn't replace the manifold gasket...guessing I probably should do that. Nice that the whole system is a breeze to work with.
