Looking at a 2008 KLR to buy

This bike is at Performance Cycle. They are asking 4999. I offered 4050. They countered at 4800. Can some of the KLR experts tell me what this bike is actually worth? I'm thinking about offering 4500.

Prices vary from market to market, and a used bike bought from a dealer will always be higher than a private party.

That said, quite a few people are buying new 2010 models for the asking price on that '08.

I'm not an expert on used bike prices and you haven't stated mileage, accessories or mods that are on this bike, but my rule of thumb would be that a used bike is worth not much more than half what a new bike costs, The more holes and irreversible mods that have been done to it, the less attractive it becomes to me.

edit: After looking at the CL posting, the bike has a few accessories, but nothing spectacular that would push the price up. And the note that it doesn't need the doohickey indicates that the owner has some idea of what makes KLRs tick, but that advice is wrong. Many are finding that the doohickey spring, at a minimum, needs to be replaced. some have reported no tension in as few as 1000 miles, which is basically out of the crate.

That seems pretty high to me.

This dealer is trying to get "new"money out of you it seems.
I'm pretty sure the trade-in was MUCH lower and the guy can still make some $$
if you buy in the low 4's.

My '09 new was 5 grand + setup in April of '09. Me thinks ya can do better.

I purchased an '08 in November 2009 with 2500 miles on the odometer for $4000.00. Doohickey had been upgraded and tall screen installed.
Dealers in my area are selling brand new '09's for an out the door price of $4999.00.
My advice is to shop around.

I can't see the link to the ad, but it sounds much too high in my opinion. I'd shop around for sure.

Don't get in a hurry to buy a KLR. A good deal will eventually find you. Check all the forums, craigslist, ebay, and??? Low miles and upgrades are what can make the difference. If you have cash and can act quickly you can land that perfect KLR.
