Misplaced love.... how do I proceed

So I strongly proclaimed my love for the Shinko 244's in several posts, because of their abilities on both dirt and street. I truly love the way this tire feels while on the bike. But, with less than 500 on the tires I notice that almost each and every knobby is starting to crack and chunk. I took it back to Cycle Gear and they said once it goes on the rim, it's pretty much out of their hands. They did, however offer to give me a great deal on another tire. I let them know I should not have to buy another tire. They're going to look into it and call me today.

Anyways, I'm going to look for the warranty info and try that route. Anyone deal with this successfully before?

Edit: One thing about Cycle Gear.... their webpage says that they don't even want their customers to worry about what the manufacturer's warranty says since their 100% money back guarantee is superior to their warranties. Hind sight 20/20, this seems wrong to me. I'm certainly going to push that back in their face if they don't take care of the problem (politely though, as Paper suggested). I've emailed the distribution center for Shinko. I let them know about the problem. I'll see what comes of it.

Be polite, and use common sense.. And go photograph what you have as far as chunking..
Contact the USA distributer of Shinko, too.. Several phone calls, a few emails, and a couple polite snail mail letters explaining the issue.. If you have it, get your receipt for the tire and if you paid to have it installed, make sure it's dated and even better, has the mileage of the bike when installed.. Also mention that the tire tread is defective and that the tire should be inspected for safe operation before it turns into another Toyota issue. A DOT rated tire is rated for safe operation on the highway, and this tire is not passing that test in the real world and may require a recall of all tires sold before someone gets KILLED!!! (I'm not an actor, but I practice theatrics on the internet)

In other words, Cover Your Ass and have the answers for everything before the questions get asked and don't be afraid to use the safety card..

Your answer that you shouldn't NEED a tire is a good one that they can't argue..

When it comes down to it and if nothing's working, the Shinko's a cheap tire and replacement might be easier than a fight.. My last Shinko front tire was $30 and I installed it myself.. Hell, it's on my bike right now!! I feel unsafe!!!

I was just about to order a set of those based on your recommendation. Think I'll stick to the Kenda's until these issues are resolved. You are not the first that I have read about.

I bought a Metzler 880 on a trip from a Cycle Gear. It turned out to be out of round. I called Cycle Gear after I got back from my trip and they had me send it back to them for a refund. I bought the tire in Portland, OR. and sent it back to their warehouse in CA. There was no problem at all.

I sold some Kenda 270's to a customer and a few of the knobs started chunking and cracking off. So I wouldn't go kenda or shinko. My Dunlop 607's and avon gripsters work good though. I also have some cheng shin 858's that have been good to me.

Date manufactured?
I wonder if they were warehoused for three years
and beginning to deteriorate long before installation. They'd be more brittle and dry.

Is this otherwise common with these tires or isolated here and there?
Just wondering. I make plastic pvc and if our "mix" is off but the color is good
we ship it anyway. We do everything from trashbags to NASCAR body shells.

An update as of April 7. I got a call from Cycle Gear and they told me they called the company and are having a new tire shipped to Cycle Gear. They are going to replace the tire and install it on their dime. Cycle Gear in Pleasanton gets two thumbs up.... more if I had more!

They really took care of business on their end. The distributor, on the other hand was not as helpful. I've not recieved an email from them about the issue. I did email them from another email asking about product info and someone emailed me back almost right away. But when I had an issue? Nothin!

Anyways, I can't ride anyways, thanks to my mangled foot but I can't wait to at least get the tire back on.
