Arm yourselves, time to talk oil.

Had a great ride with Mark, Tom, and SLO this weekend. Rode about 400 miles or around there. Now here's the Q. I topped off my oil before we left. Been using Castrol. I was low when we were leaving SLO's on the way home, and he topped me off with Rotella synthetic. I've already put 250 miles on getting home. I won't have time to change the oil until this weekend probably (at the earliest). So, what's the thinking on running Rotella Synthetic (not a lot) with Castrol. Normally, I'd just change it, but my neighbors won't let me do it at my place so it is kind of a pain now. Can I run it this way for a little while (keep in mind I already put 250 on getting home).

No problem. I've done that lots and in the end it's all slippery stuff.

Rotella Synthetic is not truly a synthetic. It is a marketing term that is allowed.

They take regular oil and process/refine the crap out of it, then stick in a high-zoot additive package, and because of all that are allowed to market it as 'synthetic'. I believe that it is only allowed to marketed as such here in the states.

Essentially then, it is not, from a miscibility standpoint, any different than Castrol.

My bike needs topping off every now and again and I will put anything that's handy in. I don't believe it will hurt a thing.

Same can be said about almost all the "synthetics" on the market. Seems to me I read that Mobil 1 and Amsoil are the only "true" synthetics.

I think that's Amsoil (veggie?) and Redline (polyalphaolefin (PAO)). If my memory is correct, Mobil 1 is the same sort of synthetic as Rotella Synthetic. There may have been a time when it was more of a true synthetic, or at least a synthetic blend.

It all mixes together. No problems that I can think of.
Not like water and oil seperating into two layers.
I did Rotella, then added 2 qts of M-1 15w-50. Now I run
Mobil/ Rotella semi synthetic 15w-45. LOL
It's a new one-off blend made by CheapMark for CheapMark
(completely by accident and chance), but so what. It's clean
brand name oil and the bike runs fine.

Just change yer oil after dark under a tarp. The neighbors'll never know. LOL

Ride on,
Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeap

Thanks everybody. I can't believe we're talking about oil like rational human beings.

Yeah, I live in an apt. It's in the rules. No working on vehicles. I lube my chain under cover of darkness (tarp is a good idea ). Can't risk the oil change though. But cool. I'll run it an worry about it when I can.
