custom fit for my 09'

After researching for a year or so on many different bikes, I decided to focus on the dual sport segment mainly for its versatility. After growing up on dirt bikes like the KX 80, I can't get the dirt out of my blood. I also own a honda 750 magna V45, and also quite frequently ride with my brother in law on his Fat boy and V-Rod Harley's.
After reading and researching in the dual sport market, my natural choice for this segment was the KLR 650. I have ridden bikes like the old KTM 620's and did not care for the ride, ecspecially on the street. The KLR has a monster reputation in this market, and I wanted in.
When the colors came out for 09' and the black was available, I had to take a trip down to the dealer for a look. I walked in and immediatly saw a brand new 09' in black and it had my name on it. I bought it in May of last year and rode through November until I put it away for another cold, wet Boston winter. This spring I took it out and noticed that it was running a little rough. I used stabil, so I knew that it wasn't gas. I had my friend come down who is a mechanic at the dealership where I bought it, and we ripped the side covers, seat, fairings, and gas tank off. We took the carb out and cleaned out every functional part, and he even added a few new tidbit parts from a carb kit. We cleaned the plug and let it rip. Runs better then new. Oh, and by the way I also put on a new Two Brothers pipe which sounds nice and throaty and also gave me a few more ponies (not to mention its half the weight of the stock pipe). I am more than happy with the street performace with the bike. I have not given it a true test off road yet, but I dont expect too much with such a heavy off roader and the stock tires. I have no complaints and I would challenge someone to come up with a better value for an on/off road bike for the $.
Not even May yet, and the bike is tuned and ready for a full new season of riding. I have to add to the 1500 miles quick, ecspecially with twins on the way in September!

Couldn't agree more !!

Tried 7 bikes over the years before finding a black '09 that just grabbed my heart and
it hasn't let go. Rode street, dirt, dualsports, Goldwing, HD's, and this one is truly
Went a notch further by removing the decals, blacking out the trees, bars, forks,
swingarm, calipers, etc, etc. I call it the batcycle now. LOL
The engine is still silver, rims, ALL bolt heads, and the silver of the discs makes
for a killer contrast to the otherwise all black scooter. This baby rocks!

Sounds like we both made a wonderful choice, and as you well know by now,
black is the fastest color too. <G>

Afterthought: As you mentioned it is very heavy especially up front for an off roader,
but I didn't want a motocrosser. Just something for blasting dirt roads and ATV trails n' such.
RR beds, rolling over curbs to get from the Wal Mart lot to Lowe's without going out to the
frontage road etc, the batcycle excels in all these areas, and climbs stairs n' hills with ease
with the heavy-ish front end.

Mine is black too, and SUPER fast! LOL. I too am very happy with owning a KLR. In 2 weeks, I am planning a full weekend of off road at a 2700 acre motorcycle park, so i will know exactly what these things can do on the dirt. I do know, these bikes are a lot heavier than the dirt bikes I used to ride, so my expectations are lowered. They do have a lot of power compared to a KX125 from years past.

I just bought a 09 Black to us as a commuter bike, wanted a bike to ride back and forth to work to keep the miles off my 08 Suzuki M109R and get better gas mileage. Well I like the KLR so much the 109 has been parked for three weeks and hasn’t moved, I have 350 miles on the 09 and just ordered a Pipe, Jet Kit, K&N air cleaner and a 16 tooth fount sprocket. This is one great bike for the city and the woods.
