Suggested mods for a newbie?...

Being very new to KLRs, can anyone recommend mod's that are worth their weight in gold?!..

I've had a flick through the Newbie FAQ page (many thanks to 'larryboy' and 'Daddjoe' for putting the links up), but didn't see anything definitive.

I've recently bought my KLR. It's a '96 model and has Renthal bars and braided hoses (have already shown their worth! Oooops..).

To be fair, the machine seems pretty unshakable, but is there something I should do quick-smart?!

Thanks, Ben

The basic mods you hear about are the .22 cent mod, airbox mods, etc. If you don't know whether a new doohickey was put in, I would do that, ride it a while, see if you think it's running lean. Then think about mods (I suggest Mark B4, he's dreamy). (bonus points for 'mod' pun) +1

In all seriousness, I kind of regret doing a lot all at once when I got my bike. I opened up the box too much and now I have the holes duct-taped off.

Doohickey, that's important. The rest? Not nearly as important, and I think we have a jump the gun mentality here sometimes. If it isn't obviously running lean, I'd leave it be for a bit.

Can you still reach the previous owner? My guess is if he did the brake lines and bars, there might be more stuff that got did.

"Oh, Mark's a nice guy and all, but dreamy, not so much" Tom said moderately.

Nice!

"You're right, he does need to trade in those redwings for some Beatle boots to be shoe-in for 'Sexiest Mod", " Tom said soulfully.

"Beagle Boots are even better," Tom said doggedly.

Thanks Lockjaw. The previous owner is a good friend of mine, so I'll interrogate him further - chances are he knows more than he's letting on! Mind you, he's soooo laid back (he's one of you interesting American characters and is known as Laid Back Larry over here!...) he's probably forgotten most of what's been done!

The .22 mod sounds interesting... over here a .22 is a rifle (over your side too, I guess?!), I trust I don't have to shoot a hole in the airbox....seems slightly excessive to me.... ;0)

It doesn't seem particularily lean so, as you suggested, I'll suck it and see for now. I'll look in to the doohickey (eagle Mike is it?). It's just done 13.5k miles, so the forks have been done and I'll probably do the coolant system, over the winter; so it's good to go, come summer.

Please let me know the rules of your interesting persiflage, it has much more of a draw than KLR mods!
