Any Lehigh Valley, PA riders?

Any riders in the Lehigh Valley, PA area? I like to ride the secondary roads and ATV trails on the state game lands.

phila area

I also have an 08 red KLR. I would like to ride on similar roads, but do not know of any within a reasonable distance from where I live in the western suburbs of Phila. I do not have a lot of dirt experience either, so I could be a hindrance to a skilled rider.

'Picking Brains' on this & other sites {trying to get my 'balance' back after 30 years} I came across your comment.

Don't know about the OP but you are close enough for me !! We go up to the area every couple of months to get 40lb bags of a specific dog food for our two Malamutes. Go right past Montogomeryville Cycle.

Point is - I'm looking for some nice {gentle} open space with DIRT to practice. I don't want to kill myself - or the bike. Also & more importantly someone to watch & advise me; someone who RIDES a KLR.

On another note - I see that you haven't gotten an answer to your 'oil question'. Oil dosen't really 'get old'; it basically accumulates contaminants and keeps them in suspension. The 'big chunks' are removed by passage through a good filter, and the 'molecule size' remain. This is where the 'additrives' come into play. In fact, your basic 'organic' oils {before all the additives} used to be reclaimed & 'reused' by intense commercial filtering. It may even still be done for large, commercial 'fleet' use.

The longer the oil is USED the heavier the load of contabinants. A simple visual indicator is the COLOR. {In a maintained automobile, it's hard to see the level on the dipstick after changing}. Oil that's been in the engine for '3,000 miles or 3 months' is noticably darker . . . and after 6 months {or more !} it virges on BLACK.

The KLR recommended 'cycle' is 1,000 - 2,000 miles. I just changed my oil and it's dark {in the 'sight glass'} after about 20 miles. This is because the oil is for a MULTI-PURPOSE use - engine and CLUTCH/TRANSMISSION. Rather then the oil {additives} breaking down from combustion products {acids, etc} it is carring a massive load of particulate matter from the clutch plates.

My bike is used but IMMACULATE - however some dolt changed the oil and threw out the 'bypass tube'. I changed the oil and ordered the tube - then installed it about a week later. Due to the configuration of the engine - this was NO PROBLEM !! With the bike on it's side-stand there was NO OIL in the filter 'compartment'. WHERE this pertains to YOUR situation . . . I'd recommend simply changing the FILTER {for 'mental health' reasons}. I'd also get a Magnetic Oil Drain Plug - and install that at your next regular oil change.

Ron Magen

{PS - please forgive the spelling errors - It seems I have to download a special checker for this 'system'}

Newbie to the list and recent 09 Blue klr (7-3-09); but have been riding a few years. NE PA has a great number of secondary roads that are oiled/stone chip gravel and/or gravel and dirt. Good places to get comfortable with what a dual sport does when the traction changes! I am looking for a Saturday am ride- any Saturday. PA State game lands are great for the "unimproved" road experience as well! Let's talk PA riders

Vince,

Specifically, WHERE are you in the 'Lehigh Valley' ?

I'm a few minutes from the Ft. Washington entrance to the PA Turnpike.
