Awareness will save your bacon!

Just a little story about being aware of your surroundings at all times. Imagine your at a 4 way intersection w/traffic light,,your in the left center turn lane,,waiting for left turn light to turn green,,and out of the corner of your eye,,you notice an F-250 coming for you @ 35 mph,, as there going thru the intersection,,and there NOT looking where there going,,,,,I had about 3 seconds to literally jump off the bike,,tword my right lane next to me,,land on the pavement,,just as I landed,,I heard the sound of the F-250 smashing my KLR,,and sending it all the way off the street,,and up on the sidewalk! And even after all that ,,the mighty 650 STILL refused to stop running! lol.{as if to say to the a-hole who hit me,,"Ill never stop running!"} Destroyed the right front fork,,bent the handlebars beyond repair, broke the front brake pedal, banged my knee up when I landed,, But I was in one piece!,,Sore,,but lived to fight another day! {gaurdian angels were present,,without a doubt} I tryied to sue him for what ever I could,,but the corrupt insurance system in this state didnt allow for any $$$ damages,,no matter what. { a very good reason to carry collision+repair included on your ins policy} So,,when your riding,,ALWAYS BE AWARE OF WHATS AROUND YOU 360 DEGREES AT ALL TIMES!!! It may save your bacon!

Glad to hear you survived relatively unscathed. I would have been a goner: there's no way I could jump off my KLR in 3 seconds. Where was the guy coming from? Was he making his own left turn from the street to your right, i.e. passing in front of you and trying to turn into the lane to your immediate left and just cut the corner too close?

It seems like here where there's a riding season and motorcycles are absent from the roads for a few months, it takes people awhile to get used to them being around again and that's when a lot of car/motorcycle accidents occur. It's also when a lot of single-vehicle motorcycle accidents happen as people have them out for the first time and are rusty and wind up running off the side of the road in curves, etc: nobody's fault but their own.

There's usually a campaign here in the Spring where the DOT will start flashing motorcycle awareness messages on its roadside boards and little yellow signs will pop up in peoples' yards and at intersections reminding them to Be Aware.

We just had our spring openers and the director of our state-wide safety program kept returning to the talking point that motorcyclists will be more present when the sky is blue and everyone's heads are in the clouds, so we need to be even more vigilant. And drivers need to be aware of our presence (which puts added responsibility on us to be VISIBLE)! Glad you're alive, no thanks to the Ferd F-teen-thousand
