iride4u I have an Altrider skid plate on order for my new KLR. I am using Atlrider as they make only very high quality products. They are new to supplying parts for the KLRs, but I have used their products on Triumphs and BMWs.

Skid plate

I don't ride hard, but the piece of mind is worth the cost of a skid plate.

That being said, I made my own plate, and it has a flat bottom. I find the value of that flat bottom to be priceless.
It mates perfect with the Harbor Freight motorcycle lift I use. I get more use out of the lift now. Every time I clean and lube my chain, I give myself a little pat on the back for making the bottom of the plate flat. So much easier to slip the jack under and lift for almost every thing I do on the KLR.

acidman1968 +1 on the Ricochet skid plate w/ the SW Motech crash bars. Fits just right, and works like a champ!

justjeff I have Ricochet skid plates on both my KLRs. The 2011 factory skid split when a foot long rock got kicked up by the front tire on a dirt road. The bike was 2 weeks old and nearly had a holed case.My 2003 had a split skid plate when bought it with 2200 miles on it.
The Ricochets offer better protection than the SW Motec version two ways: 1) the Ricochet extends farther back , better protecting the vulnerable drain plug and rear of the engine, 2) the Ricochet is a fully welded plate, not riveted like the SW Motec offering which I have seen come apart at the joins. The Ricochet fits just fine with the SW Motec crash bars on my 2011.
Regards....justjeff

Wait. You have a "spinning flashing LED taillight" and an "aluminum choke lever" but you want to warn people to spend money only on useful items?

My plastic "guard" was already cracked the first time I took it off. Long crack under a long scrape on a molded ridge. Don't know if a PO did this or if I did. I doubt that I could justify buying a new plastic piece to put there when an alu piece works better for not much cost.

The Ricochet plate now has a gouge and dimple just in front of the water pump. If the cause was a stationary object it might have missed the water pump. If it was thrown up by the tire or happened in a capsize then the water pump would have been in the way.

I have no idea if the stock piece of plastic would have helped. I know the aluminum one worked at least once and is ready for more. There are lots of smaller strikes on it too.

I don't "seriously beat" the KLR, but I'm not going to shine it like a Ducati and ride only pavement.

But if you ride only on pavement I'm sure you're right.

To a certain extent I believe it is. I used to ride downhill Mountain Bike. I started before bikes had suspension, we rode hard frames in competition and then came the suspension bikes. By the 90's I was too old to race for real but was still in it and had a couple Trek Y bikes. We called cool modifications 'The Zoot Factor'

You didn't have to be a really good rider if you had a high Zoot Factor, you looked like a really good rider.

Of course if you just want a really cool looking bike then get the plate no matter,

I cut inner tube for between the frame tubes and the skid plate. The extra width is only for bolt holes to keep it in place.

Up front I put a stack of about 3 layers under the U-bolt.
just put the same plate on mine, great deal 50 bucks, nice to get rid of the old plastic one.

bl4935 I have the SW Motech crash bars installed and ordered the SW Motech skid plate as well but it has been on back order. They tell me it should be sent this month.
