Holy crap. Is that right, your fork tubes were an inch and a quarter above the upper triple clamp???

All right, thanks for all the suggestions. Just rode 250 miles at up to 73mph similarly loaded with no problems at all. Here is what I did. Checked wheel balance, front wheel was out of balance and is balanced now. Steering head bearing adjustment checked-good. Added 5/8 to spacer in forks for preload and changed fork oil 10 weight. Fork tubes were up 1 1/4 inches in clamps, raised clamps to even with top of tubes. Added a K-9 fork brace, nice piece of machinery. Added a 550 lb spring to the stock rear schock and set preload to 4. Removed the fender pack from the front fender. Welded a new bracket on my rear racks that lets me pull my North Face Base Camp Duffel furthe forward.

I don't really plan on testing it up to 80 again just to see if I can get myself into a high side. With the knobbys and heavy duty tubes, and load I'm just not set up for speed and cruising at 67 is just fine as all the speed limits are 65 or 55 on the back highways I ride.

CDR7 Some good info here. This bike has a lot of weight up high with the large fuel tank and people have a tendency to load them down with a lot of luggage on the rear. When this is combined with a loose steering head, low tire pressures (or knobbies) and soft rear suspension, you get the wobble sooner and more violently. I experienced this first hand by experimenting the other night with a new top case that I loaded down with gear.

BTW, Harley's Road Glides are notorious for the same issue. Being a fixed fairing bike with no weight directly attached to the forks, they are VERY sensitive to steering head adjustment, tire pressures and weight distribution. We deal with the "problem" almost daily at the shop I work at. The number one cause with the Road Glide is loose steering head bearings.

clogan A wobble scares the stew outta me. Last Halloween, I got a wobble tank slapper on my Triumph Rocket III...did a high side at 75 mph. Lucky to survive. I was ATGATT, or else woulda died in all likelihood. Bike was totaled, and I nearly was. Never did find out what caused it. I'm guessing suspension failure of some sort. Anyhow, PLEASE get your wobbles sorted out and fixed before the worst happens. You might not be lucky like me.

efigalaxie This happened to me a month after getting the bike. The issue was too much weight, too much speed, not enough rear spring. I kept the shock and replaced the spring. It took care of the issue. Now at 70 if wind hits just right it may try to start, but settles out quickly. Tractor trailers seem to be worst for inducing it. I am 300lbs, 6'1. I have Shenko 244 tires front and rear.

planalp Must say, I've never had this happen and the KLR has never made me feel uncomfortable on the highway. Maybe because I never carry loads?

Be warned!!!

Hi,

Sorry. I just re-read all the posts on this thread...or is it threads on this post..?? Anyway, even with changes to suspension,etc.,a KNOBBY tire WILL NOT perform like a street tire. I just do not want anyone to think, okay I can cruise @65mph with a 50/50 tire and it will act like an Annakee or whatever...To avoid the death wobble,oscillation,etc. SLOW DOWN and have your bike evenly weighted. Please.

CheapBassTurd Well, we know the "death wobble" is caused by oscillation
feeding upon itself and getting worse. (Kinda like the shopping cart
with the bad wheel.)

Breaking up the oscillation saves our butts.

I chirp the rear tire for a split second. It breaks up
any swaying getting underway and drops the speed immediately
by 5 mph and that corrects my problem. That's how the Cheapster
does it anyway.

Now, with fully street tires, 40 psi, steering head snug but free to move,
and my knees out a bit it never happens all the way up the speedo.

Last summer's full knobbies started the wobble just over 70 mph.

Stuff to ponder on, and anyone else got ideas for staying vertical
in one of these underwear-filling events?

JGTREE Thanks guys. I raised it to the 5th setting. I've not had time to really ride it and see if it's alot better. It I'm sure it will be. I'm about 6'2"-185 so I need it a little stiffer you know .

planalp Even though there are numbers, it's kind of hard to correlate them to the lines. You'd probably be better off making sure you start at 1 and then work up to 5. It takes a little effort to get the bolt to click over to the next setting.
